If you cannot stop them, help them.
Learn to limit focuses on making drinking safer, especially for young adults. University can be stressful, but it can also be too fun. Learn to Limit strives to help students make the right decisions without feeling left out or missing out on key events.
What is Learn to Limit?
Learn to limit was a second-year university module called ‘Ethical Design’ where students were tasked to find a local issue. I observed behaviours from students and found that alcohol consumption was skyrocketing in terms of units drunk, and the NHS recommended units were overlooked and ignored.
The project began with research and interviews. Designing target audience personas, user experience graphs and more to gain an understanding of consumer behaviour and choices.
I designed an app using Figma to educate people and help them track their drinking habits non-judgmentally. Using a kind tone to display suggestions and evaluations allows people to track their habits.
The App has a scanner system that helps students find alternatives quickly, quietly and in-store so they can comfortably change their habits. The App suggests similar products with the only change being units, for example, if a beer is scanned, another beer is presented to ensure that the alternatives are to taste.
Finally, the App provides in-depth tracking and data analytics so people can fully control their alcohol intake by visually recognising patterns of key days drunk, what drink, and how many units. Optionally, people can also track the money spent to motivate them to lower it to save their wallet and their health.
The social media page seen previously allows us to target the audience through their most-used app and, therefore, help more people become educated on alcohol consumption.
